Traditional
Students were given multiple-choice tests at the end of each topic unit. They were also given quizzes periodically on material.

Below are some examples of alternative assessments. Samples of student work can be found here.
Three-two-one: Students were given this alternative assessment two separate times. The first time was during a unit on DNA structure. They were asked to Write three things you know about DNA structure. Name two scientists who helped discover DNA is the genetic material in organisms. Describe one concept you are still struggling with The second time was during a two-day lesson on photosynthesis. Annotated Student Drawing: Draw and label a picture that would help someone understand what happens to a red blood cell as it goes through the circulatory system. Characteristics of arteries, veins, capillaries and other components of the blood should be included. Arrows showing the flow of blood should also be included. Use the least amount of words possible. DNA Structure Check: Students built DNA strands out of jelly beans and licorice in the lab, Have Your DNA and Eat It Too. Before they were able to eat the candy structures, students had to have their structures checked by the teacher. |

Four formative assessments were chosen from Science Formative Assessment: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning and implemented in a 9th grade Biology classroom. A rubric was created for one of the assessments. Students' work was collected and analyzed.
