Parent Letter
Dear Parents,
Your child will soon be taking part in an exciting 3-week long project titled “Biospheres.” It will address concepts such as human impact on the environment, the interdependence of life, and nutrient cycles. Your child will be expected to build their own enclosed terrarium that mimics a biome of their choice. During the course of the unit, your child will be observing and tweaking their terrarium as he or she learns new information. A log of their observations and modifications will be evaluated as well as a culminating poster presentation to share their findings with their classmates. We would love to also have you join us on the day of our poster presentations so you can see your child’s hard work firsthand.
During this project, our class will visit the Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the University of Florida campus. This field trip will give your child an example of a real-life vivarium to reference when building their own enclosed, sustainable, artificial biospheres. The field trip will cost approximately $10 per student and each student must bring their own lunch. We are in need of chaperones so please contact me if you are interested. We appreciate your time! A permission slip with the date of the field trip will be sent home shortly.
In addition, your child will need an empty 2-liter bottle to build their artificial biosphere and a poster for their final poster presentation. Help in the form of donations or time are greatly appreciated. The entire project is explained in detail on the following website: http://ashlieufteach.weebly.com/project-based-instruction.html. Please feel free to contact me directly by email ([email protected]) or phone (XXX-XXX-XXXX) with any questions and/or comments.
This is a great opportunity for your child to relate real-world applications to their schooling. I look forward to working with your child to create their own terrariums!
Sincerely,
Ms. Kinnaman
